[94/100] Playman: Extreme Running
Game Title: Playman: Extreme Running
Company: Mr. Goodliving
Game Platform: J2ME
Tested Version: 1.0.4
Phone Reviewed: N70
"Parcour" is on everyone's lips, and now Mr. Goodliving tries to mix the popular brand "Playman" with this new exiting sport. Is this a successful combination?
Story:
You play as either "Playman", or "Blaise", who is the female equivalent to Playman. You must complete all levels in a given time and collect all flags. There are miscellaneous modes like "Sprint", "Flag-Hunting" and "Score-Flow":
- In Sprint Mode, you must find all flags and be faster then an opponent.
- In Flag-Hunting Mode, the challenge is to find all flags, but without arrows, which show you the way to the flags, as in "Sprint" mode.
- In Score-Flow Mode, the target is to make the most sensational moves, and get the biggest scores.
Once You have finished all 12 levels in single player mode, you'll then have the opportunity to play them all again with your friends. The promise is a lot of fun, because the mobile phone "walks" from player to player, with the fastest Playman appearing as invisible or "ghost".
Design:
The animation of Playman, for me, is the best animation of a token I've ever seen in a mobile game, and it is totally comparable to a PC game. The levels are detailed, varied and sometimes you also play at night, which creates an atmosphere as if you were doing something illegal! Sometimes there are some doves which fly away when you appear, which looks quite nice. There are a few different objects on which you can jump, run and slide; such as cranes, walls, containers, and for sure, all kinds of buildings, like towers.
The theme music is a bit annoying, and I didn't hear any kind of sound effects. It's better for your head to just disable the sound completely, and enjoy the excellent graphics.
Gameplay:
Playman runs automatically through the levels, and you only have to click the direction in which he should do this. Clicking RIGHT, during your token runs, when running rightwards, or LEFT when running leftwards, makes Playman do a roll forward, and clicking UP while running, will make him do a flip etc, etc.... The is a nice method of control, which you can get the hang of very quickly.
Maybe some of you will now think: "Oh, pressing buttons in time? This was so boring with 'Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones'. There's no feeling of freedom"....
STOP: the feeling is already there, and it's not more then a easement for you. So all things considered, the controls are successful in making it absolutely fun to maneuver through the barriers.
Conclusion:
After much waiting, Playman is back and he's better than ever before. The only reason I'm not giving this the "Ultimate" Award, is the poor sound. When Mr. Goodliving improves this feature, they will raise the bar up to the sky!
