Game Title: Beezzz Developer: Xendex Entertainment Publisher: Hands-On Mobile Game Platform: J2ME Tested Version: 0.3.9 Phone Reviewed: Nokia N95 8GB
To Bee or Not to Bee: That is the Question!
Story:
Good times for Bees, nowadays. Following the buzz (sorry for the word game!) created by Dreamworks' new animated film, "Bee Movie", Hands-On Mobile gives us the chance to play as one of them, as if they wanted to let us know how puzzling and stressful it can be in their mission to pollinate flowers! Do you want to be a Bee? I believe that being human is much easier!
Design:
After blessing us with such great games as "FMX III Hardcore", Xendex Entertainment proved, once again, they got skills. Graphics are well done: colorful as much as you would like a cartoon to be! The background has many nice details too, but it will quickly turn out to be a little repetitive; the landscape is always the same, no new flowers or elements besides water, mushrooms and grass. A "Flower Radar" on the bottom of the screen shows the available combinations of flowers you can match up to make combos. Sounds are pleasant, too, but they won't make the game look any better.. you can easily turn them off.
Gameplay: BEEzzz is basically a puzzle game where you'll have to put together "flowers" instead of the classic "blocks"! There are no additional game modes or new levels to unlock, your aim will simply be to reach the highest score, matching up as many combos as you can before the timer reaches zero. There are five different "flowers", based on their color, and pressing '5' when close to one will allow you to home in, and harvest its pollen. That's when the "Flower Radar" comes into play, giving you all the possible combinations of colors to get points... combos will give you more or less points depending on the colors you match up, and give you extra time, too. The more you match flowers of the same color, the more difficult it will be to find a similar one again.
Overall, the concept is really nice, but the game has its flaws. First of all, as I said before, no extra game modes and levels... trying to beat your own high score is quite challenging, but how long will the fun last? Just the time of a quick play, ten minutes and you're almost done. Plus, controlling the Bee is a hard job: moving around the screen is a bit difficult and awkward, thus making the game quite frustrating... who ever thought it was easy to fly, anyway?
Conclusion:
Good to see there's still a chance to play an original and solid puzzle game like BEEzzz! A few improvements, more levels for example, would have made it even more enjoyable though. Waiting for BEEzzz 2!
