[89/100] Silent Hunter: U-Boat Aces [ENG]

Game Title: Silent Hunter: U-Boat Aces
Developer: HandyGames, GmbH
Publisher: AMA/Ubisoft Entertainment
Game Platform: J2ME
Tested Version: 1.0.0
Phone Reviewed: Sony Ericsson K800

Countries Have Not Friends, But Interests.

Story:
In a world where countries have not friends but interests, there's a lot to loose but also much to win. In the middle of the war, your only mission is to destroy your enemy and stay on foot. Nothing can stop you but the fiery destruction of your submarine, and your life along with it.

Design:
The game's menu system may not be the best, but it is very complete. The in-game quality, though, does have some nice graphics, animated sprites, special effects and a great sound. You can choose to enable or disable not just music, but also special effects. The environments are also very nice; the water is animated, and the quality and quantity of the active units in the levels is exceptionally good for this being a java game. I can tell you the developers did a very good job on all the content here; each time you finish a mission you can try to do it all over again, or you may repair your submarine, enhance it and go on to play other missions. The story line, although not very specific, is good for those who don't know a lot about history, and can introduce you very well into the game's main theme, the war.

Gameplay:
As there's no option to choose a difficulty level, and I have to say this is not exactly the easiest game I've ever played, nor the fastest time I invested to learn how to dominate it. The tutorial explains everything very well and with details, such as the HUD, your weapons, how to hide and go back to the surface, and it even advices you on what to do or what to use in certain situations and really gives you a helping hand at gameplay. However, if you choose to skip the tutorial, you can always find help in the help menu. The frame-rate is constant, without slowdowns, despite the great effects. It's not easy to dominate at first, but highly addictive!

Conclusion:
I Honestly wasn't expecting that great of game before I began testing this. I'm happy to see HandyGames managed to create such a piece after sometime without testing their games. Sometimes the review task is not very easy due to personal tastes and the games you are presented with. But while I'm not a big fan of war games, and the concept of driving a diving submarine is new to me, I have to admit the fantastic concept of the game kept me playing for some time and was very enjoyable. This is definitely a good choice, not only for war fanatics, but for everyone.
